Pondicherry

See my earlier posts on Pondicherry:

Sunrise in Pondicherry

This post takes together miscellaneous photos of Pondicherry and puts them together in a single post. This will then leave only a post on Auroville to write up.

The Mahatma Gandhi statue is one of the highlights of downtown Pondicherry. It is situated by, you guessed it, Mahatma Gandhi beach, which is a narrow strip of land on the shore that serves as the downtown beach.

You can see the Lighthouse in the background, and the customs office next to it.

The French War Memorial is a monument to soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. I don't know whether only French soldiers who died are remembered here. The plaque reads "... fallen soldiers from French India...", so I assume it includes all soldiers, Indian, French, and others, who died during the war.

A prominent bookshop in the main market in Pondicherry.

And a Hallmark store too.

A feature of downtown Pondicherry, and mostly of the French part of downtown, is that the streets are French, and the signs too are in French, and that lends this part of Pondicherry a very distinctive feel, different from other cities in India.

And atop some houses you can also see the French flag flying.

The Sri Aurobindo Center of Education is a part of the Aurobindo Society in downtown Pondicherry. Across the street is Aurobindo Ashram. The Aurobindo Center is a school and also does research in new ways of learning and education. Aurobindo Ashram is where Sri Aurobindo live during his stay in Pondicherry. His samadhi can be found there. It is open to all during working hours of the Ashram. Photography is not allowed inside, and while the security guards do not prohibit the entry of children, they generally discourage young children from going inside. This is because at Sri Aurobindo's samadhi, there is absolute silence. You will always find a small throng of devotees sitting or meditating there, but not a single word. No sound. It is peaceful there. You can actually listen to your own thoughts there.

There is a post office across the road. So now you know the pincode of the area: 605002.

A policeman.

Baker Street is a famous bakery in Pondicherry. A must visit place for tourists. However, be forewarned that it is pricey, and apart from the fact that it is on the visit-list of tourists, there is nothing really distinctive about the place. Small and quiet.

Mantri Square Mall

The Mantri Square mall is billed as the largest mall in India. As of July 2010. Till the next bigger mall comes around. At 1.7 million square feet, and parking space for 2,000 cars, the mall is big.

The food court at the top level.

The Reliance group seems to have taken space en-masse at the mall.

Puma and Nike shoe stores adjacent to each other.

I wonder if they paid any royalty to the producers of Forrest Gump, or even acknowledged the, err..., aphorism.

A shiny new Honda Accord, waiting to be won. And gift-wrapped too with a nice red ribbon.

The first outlet of the fast-food chain, Taco Bell, in India. Already a huge hit with people.

The formal inauguration of the mall was done by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Yeddyurappa.

Rajdhani restaurant at UB City Mall

Photos from the Rajdhani restaurant at the UB City Mall in Bangalore (my earlier post on the UB City Mall).
Weekday rates for a lunch buffet, and a buffet is all you get there, and a buffet is more than you can eat, are Rs 225 per person, inclusive of all taxes. Weekend rates are higher. Weekend wait times are also longer. If you get there around 1pm or so, expect to wait an hour or longer. After 2pm or so they even stop accepting people since the restaurant itself closes at 3pm or 3:30 pm.
The food is a mix of mostly Rajasthani and some Gujarati cuisine, and can be a bit spicy. The kadhi is delicious, as are almost all other items.

The toughest part is after they lay out the plate, with all the bowls, and before they start to serve all the food.

The plate fills up quite quickly, and gets emptied with almost equal speed.
The other challenge of course was in waiting till the plate had filled so I could take the photos.

Ebony Restaurant

View from Ebony restaurant on MG Road - this is the view of MG Road and the parade grounds from Ebony rooftop restaurant in the Barton center. And the food isn't bad either. On weekends the buffet is priced at Rs 250 per head. You have to get there before 1pm to get seating, lest you wait.

Panchvati Gaurav in Bombay

For the princely sum of Rs 145 (that would be less than US$4) you can eat all you want at Panchvati Gaurav, a Gujarati cuisine restaurant in Mumbai, opposite Bombay Hospital.
More than 20 different items are served, including more than five types of breads.
